Jamal Yunos, nine supporters charged with rioting and disrupting peace

KUALA LUMPUR: Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos and nine of his supporters were charged in a Sessions Court in Ampang here with two counts of rioting and disrupting peace last year.

The nine are Reza Jamin, Ariffin Abu Bakar, Mohd Shabudin Abu Hassan, Izzrul Idris, Hasannen Zikri Harizan, Mohd Faiz Amirul Mahsan, Mohd Yusoff Mohd Sharif, Abd Razak Hassan and R. Balaguru.

They were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 (Act 336).

They claimed trial before Judge Rushan Lutfi Mohamed on Thursday.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Iskandar Ahmad, who headed the prosecution team, proposed bail at RM5,000 in one surety each.

Counsel Izzat Zabir Sariff and Khairul Anuar Yusoff acted for the 10.

Judge Rushan set bail at RM3,000 in one surety each pending mention on May 3.

On Nov 13 last year, Jamal was left with a bloodied nose when things got rowdy between his Red Shirts group and the police.

The Red Shirts leader and his supporters had spent most of the day allegedly pursuing Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin from PKR and her Bersih supporters, mocking them as an LGBT group.

The Red Shirts showed up outside Ampang Point around 3pm to harass Bersih supporters when Jamal was allegedly seen shoving a man in a Bersih shirt before police stepped in.

A heated scuffle between the police and the Red Shirts ensued, ending with two members being arrested and Jamal bleeding from his nose.

He later claimed that he was punched by one of Zuraida's men although Bersih supporters had left by the time the scuffle broke out.
