Construction firm fined RM15,000 for GST offence

JOHOR BARU: A construction company was fined RM15,000 by the Sessions Court here for registering itself late for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) last year.

MKYS Construction Sdn Bhd, which was represented by a director, Chang Yin Siang, 44, pleaded guilty after the charge under Section 184(4) of the GST Act 2014, was read out before judge Kamarudin Kamsun.

The company failed to register itself with the Customs Department for GST before the Feb 28 deadline last year and only did so 11 days later.

Customs Department prosecuting officer Mazliza Abdul Wahid prosecuted while the company was represented by Lim Man Yong.

Lim asked for minimum punishment because of the unstable economic situation and that GST implementation was still new.

Kamarudin set a fine of RM15,000 or six months imprisonment in default.

Meanwhile, Ihospital Apple Repair and Upgrade owner Yau Kam Loy, 33, was fined RM5,000 or two months jail in default for the same offence.

The handphone and accessories shop, which is located in a plaza in Jalan Datuk Sultan Sulaiman, here, only registered itself on March 14 last year.
