PETALING JAYA: The Star Online retained its place as the most popular English language news portal in Malaysia, recording 817,000 unique visitors in the month of June.
This was well ahead of nearest rival Malaysiakini which recorded 662,000 unique visitors, according to a report from the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) and comScore Inc.
In its June report released yesterday, they said The Star’s news portal (thestar.com.my), was tops among English language news portals and in seventh place among 30 local websites.
The portal has consistently placed first among English language news portals.
Other English language news portals on the MDA and comScore Top-30 chart were Malaysiakini.com in eighth place and themalaysianinsider.com in 16th place.
News portals of The Malay Mail Online, The New Straits Times and The Sun failed to make it into the ranking.
“The malaysianinsider.com experienced the biggest drop in ranking, moving down seven places (since April),” the report said.
The website with the most unique visitors in June was www.maybank2u.com.my, with a total of 2,124,000.
In second place was online marketplace Mudah.my, in third was airline website AirAsia.com, and fourth was banking site cimbclicks.com.my.
The reported unique visitor numbers were based on people in Malaysia aged 15 and above, who accessed the Internet from home and work desktop and laptop computers in June, according to the report.
The results match an Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) report published in May which showed that The Star’s circulation rose for both its print and digital formats.
The ABC report also showed that The Star maintains its position as the country’s No. 1 English language newspaper.
