National Geographic documentary on Tun Razak

PETALING JAYA: The life of the second prime minister recognised as Bapa Pembangunan is relived in a documentary titled A Leader’s Legacy: Tun Abdul Razak.

The exclusive 60-minute National Geographic Channel documentary tells the personal story of the former leader and his journey to steer the country out of chaos during the May 13 racial riots.

“Many of us only know him from history books. I feel this story is both inspiring and important especially to my generation who did not live in that era,” said director Justin Ong at a press conference yesterday.

He also said that the documentary featured a technique to animate archival photographs to bring about a fresh perspective.

A co-production with the Information, Communication and Culture Ministry and National Film Development Corporation (Finas), in association with Astro, the documentary was directed by Ong and produced by Lina Teoh.

It also featured interviews with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is Abdul Razak’s eldest son, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam and former finance minister Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah among other figures who had worked with Abdul Razak.

The documentary is part of National Geographic Channel’s special programmes for Malaysia’s 53rd Independence Day titled A Nation Rises: Malaysia.

It will have both Bahasa Malaysia and English language tracks and subtitles.

The documentary will premiere on National Geographic Channel (Astro Channel 553) today at 9pm with repeats at 9pm on National Day (Aug 31), Sept 5 and Malaysia Day (Sept 16).
