TNB eyes overseas power assets

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) will explore several opportunities abroad, especially into the emerging economies, that are in tandem with its growth aspirations.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd said TNB’s sustainable and continued growth depended on both domestic and foreign expansion.

“When evaluating prospective acquisitions, commercial considerations would be emphasised above all factors to maximise shareholders’ value,” he said in a statement issued after TNB’s AGM on Monday.

He said it was also vital for TNB to only enter into ventures close to the electricity business which it knew best.

Under TNB’s domestic and regional champion aspiration, he said, 5,000MW of regional capacity would be added to its asset list.

The company’s current installed capacity was 10,818MW, he said.

Recently, TNB took over the development of 2,000MW coal-fired power plant in Jimah, Negri Sembilan (Project 3B), which would complement the 1,010MW Manjung Unit IV coal-fired power plant (commissioned in April 2015) and the Prai 1,071MW gas-fired power plant (scheduled for completion in January 2016).

“We are excited at the prospect of having about 5,500MW of new generation capacity added to our fleet between 2015 and 2019,” Azman said.

He said TNB was committed to grow its renewable energy portfolio and was keen to participate in the coming competitive bidding exercise by Energy Commission for new renewable generation capacity. - Bernama
