In this photograph taken april 23, 2014, Indonesian military chief General Moeldoko displays his luxury watch to journalists in Jakarta which he claims is a fake. Local news reports said the general made the clarification after Singapore media recently showed a photograph of Moeldoko wearing an expensive watch. Local media reported that Moeldoko said the original watch is about 100,000 USD and he bought the fake watch made in China for about around 450 USD. AFP PHOTO

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s military chief came under fire after rejecting claims he had been pictured wearing a luxury Swiss watch and insisting that the timepiece was a Chinese-made fake.

However General Moeldoko’s claim was met with scepticism and anger yesterday in a country where millions live in grinding poverty and there is much sensitivity about high-ranking officials leading luxurious lifestyles.
