GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government is ready for any lawsuit initiated by Penang PAS over the dismissal of its representatives at various local authorities.
“We will wait for their lawyer’s letter,” said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in response to reports that Penang PAS was considering suing the Penang state government over its June 17 removal of Yaacob Omar from the Penang Island City Council and Omar Hassan from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.
Penang PAS commissioner Fauzi Mohd Yusof said the party had engaged lawyers to look into the matter, claiming the duo’s dismissal was without basis and not in accordance with procedures.
“The party’s dignity is on the line. We are questioning the state government’s action in sacking our councillors,” he said yesterday.
Penang PAS secretary Mohd Fadzil Kemi was removed as information officer from the Chief Minister’s Office on June 12, making him the first PAS representative to lose his job in Penang following bitter quarrels between DAP and PAS at the national level.
The move to purge PAS representatives in the state administration came after Lim declared that Pakatan Rakyat was dead following the decision by PAS’ Dewan Ulama to sever ties with DAP.
Two other PAS councillors – Md Nasir Yahya (Penang Island City Council) and Dahalan Fazil (Seberang Perai Municipal Council) – resigned after former PAS deputy chief Mohamed Sabu and former state deputy commissioner I Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa resigned from their posts in the state.
Only Permatang Pasir assemblyman Salleh Man still holds the post of Penang Islamic Affairs Council president.
