Police free to investigate ex-PM, says Bung Moktar

KUALA LUMPUR: The police are free to investigate Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad if they deem his statements on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu are seditious, says Umno backbencher and Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.

He said the former prime minister was merely exercising his right as a citizen of a democratic country.

“The Opposition often says we live in a country which has no democracy. Dr Mahathir is playing his role as a citizen exercising freedom of speech.

“If the police think his statements have seditious tendencies, then they can investigate him. What is the problem?” he asked during the debate on the Sedition (Amendment) Bill 2015 in reply to Ramkarpal Singh Deo (DAP-Bukit Gelugor).

Ramkarpal had interjected Bung Mokhtar and questioned if Dr Mahathir’s criticism was more serious than Nga Kor Ming’s (DAP-Taiping) who asked about the Government’s purchase of a fleet of BMWs.
