PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman will perform thorough backgrounds checks on enforcement personnel to uncover any terrorist or militant links, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid.
The Home Minister said background checks were not subjected only for civilians as enforcement and security personnel would also get the same treatment.
“No one is above suspicion as far as terrorist activities are concern.
“We are not saying that all security personnel have such links but we want to weed out those who are,” he told a press conference here on Monday.
Dr Ahmad Zahid was commenting on the arrest of a Royal Malaysian Navy officer along with two others for allegedly being involved in a militant group on Friday.
“The Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division have always monitored those suspected of terrorist activities.
“There is no compromise against those who threatened our country’s safety and security,” he said.
On Friday, a navy officer was among the three detained in Sabah for being part of a military group planning to undertake suicide bombings in Syria and Iraq.
They are linked to the rebel Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) in the Middle East and al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines.
The Counter-Terrorism Unit has arrested 15 members of the group since April 28.
