SEPANG: An air of nostalgia enveloped the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) as its operations drew to a close.
For the 3,550 staff of AirAsia, more than 1,000 personnel of various departments, such as Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), Immigration Department and airport police, as well as outlet operators, the eight-year stay at the 390,000 sq ft terminal has been a bittersweet experience.
AirAsia flight operations executive Nor Mazliana Zainal Abidin, said: “Well, I feel sad, since I have been here since it first opened in 2006.
“While I look forward to work at the new office in KLIA2 tomorrow (today), this terminal will always carry good memories of my work experience,” she said yesterday.
Sales outlet BodyShop employee Mohd Nor Bakti Hakim said that despite passengers complaining of how hot and humid the terminal was, he had always enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the busy airport.
“Business was very good and I enjoyed working here.
“Hopefully, I get a similar feel when we begin at KLIA2,” he said while packing goods to be sent to the new store at KLIA2.
AirAsia, the last low-cost carrier operating at LCCT, had its last flight departing to Kolkata at 10.30pm yesterday; while AirAsia X’s last flight left for Jeddah at 2.30am today.
Following these flights, the LCCT ended operations at 3am today and all low-cost carriers will fully operate at KLIA2.
AirAsia announced its arrival at KLIA2 after its first flight landed at the new terminal from Ho Chi Minh City yesterday afternoon.
The inaugural flight was received by AirAsia Bhd executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun; AirAsia CEO Aireen Omar, MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid and MAHB senior general manager operation services Datuk Azmi Murad.
In a statement, AirAsia announced the arrival of 27 flights at KLIA2 yesterday and another 15 flights scheduled to land in the early hours of today.
