KUALA LUMPUR: The batteries in MH370's black box was only due for replacement in June 2014, said Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.
Ahmad Jauhari was commenting on a CNN report, quoting a US-based manufacturer saying that the batteries were due to be replaced in 2012, but claimed his company did not receive them.
Dukane Seacom Inc president Anish Patel said the batteries in the black box could now last only between 20 to 25 days running on the old batteries, rather than the 30 days as said by authorities.
"We confirm there is a maintenance programme where the batteries are replaced prior to expiry, but we do know that the batteries are due for replacement only in June 2014," Ahmad Jauhari said.
He also confirmed that the MAS avionics workshop in Subang, where a fire broke out on March 28, was certified to repair avionic equipment on board MH370.
The plane's black box is expected to run out of power by the weekend and will stop emitting pings, even as two underwater vessels, 10 military planes, three civilian jets and 11 shops are scouring the southern Indian Ocean to find debris and detect a signal from the Boeing 777-200.
On another matter, Ahmad Jauhari declined to disclose the exact amount of fuel that was on MH370, saying that it was enough to last for an eight-hour flight.
"The exact figure is with the investigation team, in terms of the weight of the fuel. When we correlate that versus the last known signal, it is about eight hours of flight.
"So, we do not have any more after that. I know they are looking for some more data but that's it. The aircraft would have just run out of fuel," he said.
