Wrecked up: The bus driven by Shanmuganathan, who died after falling under its wheels.
KUALA LUMPUR: A 38-year-old bus driver was killed after falling under the wheels of his own vehicle in a freak accident at KM11 of the Maju Expressway (MEX).
It is learnt that the driver, identified as V. Shanmuganathan, was heading to the Kuala Lumpur Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) when he lost control of the vehicle at around 6.15am yesterday.
He was on the way to LCCT to pick up his first batch of passengers for the day and transport them to Genting Highlands.
It is believed that Shanmuganathan was flung out of the bus after it rammed into a street lamp.
He then fell under the wheels of the still moving bus and was crushed to death.
The street lamp then fell onto the other side of the road, narrowly missing a motorcyclist, who smashed into another bus while trying to avoid it.
Che Mohd Rezuan Che Aman, 23, broke his thigh bone in the collision and was sent to Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for treatment.
The driver of the other bus, Mohd Farouk Ishak, 32, escaped injury.
City Traffic Chief Asst Comm Rusli Mohd Noor confirmed receiving a report on the accident and said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
The victim’s cousin S. Jeyakumaran, 50, said Shanmuganathan was a very kind and likeable person and had 15 years of experience as a bus driver.
“Shan had a twin brother, and both of them were married to twin sisters. He will be dearly missed by the family,” Jeyakumaran said at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur mortuary where Shanmuganathan’s body was sent for a post-mortem.
He leaves behind four children.
The manager of the bus company where Shanmuganathan worked, S. Ramesh, said the victim was a disciplined driver and had not been involved in any accident in the past five years.
He said Shanmuganathan would make three round trips from LCCT to Genting Highlands daily.
Shanmuganathan’s body will be brought back to his hometown in Ipoh, Perak for his funeral today.
