KUALA LUMPUR: Two Myanmar political leaders narrowly escaped death in Bukit Bintang when a pillion rider on a motorcycle fired several shots in their direction in what is believed to be an assassination attempt.
Rakhine Nationalities Development Party chairman Dr Aye Maung and Arakan League for Democracy Party chairman Aye Thor Aung were travelling in a BMW with two of their countrymen in Jalan Alor when the incident occurred at 11.30pm two days ago.
The shot went wide and the gunman fled on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice. Initial investigation have not ruled out that the shots were fired by Myanmar nationals.
According to a source, the politicians had just left a shopping centre when their vehicle was attacked by the two men.
“Following the shooting, the car sped to a hotel. A police report was later lodged,” said the source, adding that no one was injured.
City CID deputy chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa said an investigation was under way to determine the motive for the attempted murder.
