PETALING JAYA: It was a day of mixed fortunes for Malaysian golfers in the World Amateur Team Championships in Kairuzawa, Japan.

The Malaysian team, comprising Gavin Kyle Green, Low Khai Jei and Muhd Wafiyuddin Abdul Manaf, suffered a demoralising start on Wednesday – posting a combined total of one-under 143 to be placed in joint 34th place.

They are nine shots behind joint leaders Canada, Sweden and Switzerland (134).

But Gavin did reasonably well – carding a four-under 68 to share ninth spot with 17 others in the individual chart.

Khai Jei and Wafiyuddin carded identical three-over 75 to be placed joint 125th.

Sixty-seven teams are competing in the 29th edition of the biennial event, also commonly known as the Eisenhower Trophy.

In Antalya, Turkey, two years ago, Malaysia – comprising Gavin, Khai Jei and Arie Irawan Fauzi – finished 12th.
