Don’t charge driver for mishap due to gear failure

I REFER to the report “Lorry driver flees after 13-vehicle pile-up” (The Star, March 22). It is noted that the lorry was being used to transport sand along the highway when the driver lost control after the gear malfunctioned near the Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari intersection at Shah Alam.

The lorry collided with 12 other vehicles but fortunately there were no fatalities. The driver fled the scene ostensibly to avoid being beaten up by the angry motorists whose cars were damaged in the pile-up.
