Philippine leader had it his own way


A STRANGE thing happened at the just concluded 31st Asean Summit in Manila.

Not a single world leader raised the issue or questioned President Rodrigo Duterte on his controversial “war against drugs” crusade. The Western media, in particular, had played up the Philippines’ human rights record and the extra-judicial killings of thousands of drug pushers and addicts, and how United States President Donald Trump and other leaders would voice their concerns with their Filipino counterpart. But in the end, Duterte was let off without even a slap on his wrist.
