Elderly woman's body found in river in Sarawak

SARIKEI: The body of an elderly woman reported missing since Thursday was found on the banks of Sungai Baron, 29 kilometres from here on Sunday.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre spokesman said the body of Lenya Sigat, 62, was discovered by a search and rescue team at 10.35am, approximately 100 metres from where she was reported missing.

"The second team, walking along the river towards the last known location of the victim, found her body floating unclothed on the riverbank," he said in a statement.

According to the police report, the victim's disappearance was only noticed when her younger brother realised she was not at home at 1pm last Thursday.

He then checked the bathing area at a stream in front of Rumah Tury but failed to find her there.

Initial search efforts with the villagers led to the discovery of a white paint bucket along with items such as soap and the victim’s clothing, swept away 100 metres from the bathing area. - Bernama
