ALOR SETAR: Expansion and upgrading work at the Langkawi International Airport, costing some RM89mil, is expected to be fully completed by Aug 31, 2018.

The project, which is under Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), will go through two phases.

The first involves the upgrade of the parking area and facilities.

Phase two, meanwhile, will see the upgrading of the airport's arrival terminal, the commercial terminal, driveway towards the main terminal, toilets and surau.

State Transportation committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said that the RM89mil allocation had been approved by the National Economic Council, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Jun 5.

"The tender process of the first phase was opened on July 24, 2017 and closed recently on Aug 9. Eighteen companies took part in the tender process.

"The work for the first phase is expected to start on Sept 1 and expected to complete on Oct 15," he said at the state assembly meeting on Wednesday.

He added that work on the second phase will begin on Oct 15 and is expected to be fully completed by Aug 31, 2018.
