‘Caning move is against national obligations’


PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan government’s move to impose public caning for syariah offences runs contrary to the inter­national human rights treaties of which Malaysia is a party to.

Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail said that caning, in any setting, violates the absolute prohibition of torture under international law and is prohibited by the international human rights treaties.
