Zahid to meet RoS over DAP's registration next week

KUCHING: A decision on whether DAP is deregistered may be known by next week when Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix) meets Registrar of Societies (RoS) director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said RoS received a letter from DAP requesting that leaders elected in its previous party polls be recognised as valid office bearers.

He said the matter had been studied in detail by the RoS.

"I have discussed this with the RoS director-general and have not received a final decision on DAP's appeal.

"I will meet RoS again next week and I hope they can provide a written report by then," he told reporters at the Gawai open house of Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah on Monday.

Asked whether DAP would be deregistered, Dr Ahmad Zahid said he did not see any effort being made to deregister the party or otherwise.

He said the party's fate depended on whether it had breached its constitution and regulations.

"If the regulations were not followed, the RoS will make a professional decision according to the party's constitution," he said.

He also urged DAP not to speculate on the issue until the RoS has made an announcement.

Earlier on Monday, DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang warned party members to prepare for the possibility that the party may be deregistered and its logo disallowed before the next general election.
