PETALING JAYA: The 'balik kampung' exodus for Hari Raya was in full swing early Friday morning as traffic slowed to a crawl on most major expressways heading out of the city.
The first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected to fall on Sunday, prompting most city folk to begin travelling back to their hometowns on the final working day before the long weekend.
As at 10.30am, traffic was heavily backed up at several stretches heading north, according to updates by Star Media Radio Group's (SMRG) traffic team (@mytraffic) and PLUS Highway.
The stretch from Lembah Beringin to Tanjung Malim was backed up for more than 6km due to an earlier accident.
A PLUS official told The Star that traffic was almost at a standstill for at least 10km between Tapah and Gua Tempurung, where the road stretches uphill.
Traffic is also backed up for more than 3km from Slim River to Sungkai, and for a 4km stretch between Jelapang and the Menora Tunnel.
The congestion continued after the Menora Tunnel and stretched all the way to Sungai Perak.
Meanwhile, another accident between Changkat Jering and Taiping also caused traffic to be slow-moving for about 6km as rescuers worked to clear the crash site.
On the Karak Highway heading east, traffic was at a 15km crawl after Gombak all the way to Genting Sempah, and from the Genting Sempah rest area to Bukit Linggi and Lentang.
On the Johor causeway, SMRG traffic reported that all lanes heading into Singapore were busy.
Meanwhile, traffic remained smooth on the Penang Bridge on both sides.
Travellers have been advised to plan their journey in advance to avoid delays.
