BALING: An unemployed woman has pleaded not guilty in a magistrate’s court here to a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of a police officer and his wife in a road accident.
Yeoh Chiew Fern, 36, made the plea after the charge was read out before magistrate Mohd Izmi Ibrahim yesterday.
She was charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicating drug and causing the death of Baling Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department head Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38, and his wife Suriya Abdul Rahman, 37, in Kampung Telok Teduri, Jalan Baru Kupang-Baling near here, at 7.15am on April 18.
The charge, under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000 if found guilty.
Baling district office legal officer Insp Harlina Othman, who prosecuted, did not offer bail.
However, the court set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and also ordered Yeoh’s driving licence to be suspended pending disposal of the case.
The court fixed May 30 for mention to allow Yeoh to engage a lawyer and for submission of documents. — Bernama
