Father laments tragic streak of misfortune

KUALA LUMPUR: The father of four-year-old Mohd Aqil Azizan Mohd Azmil who fell to his death from the family's 17th floor apartment balcony broke down over the streak of misfortune to befall his family.

"It is too much, too many tests from God," said Mohd Azmil Amat, 31, wiping away tears outside the mortuary at Hospital Kuala Lumpur Sunday.

He said he lost his mother six months after his daughter was born.

"I lost my restaurant business in Tanjung Malim.

"Then my daughter developed heart problems and needed heart surgery. Now my son is gone, too," he said.

Mohd Azmil and his wife were at the National Heart Institute looking after their six-year-old daughter, who had had heart surgery when the tragic incident occurred.

Grandfather Mat Radin, 60, said he was with Mohd Aqil in the apartment in Lorong Haji Hussein 2, here, when the incident took place.

"He was sleeping with me when I felt him wake up and go to the living room but I didn't hear anything.

"I thought he wanted to play hide and seek," he said.

Police said the incident occurred around 5.45am when they believe Mohd Aqil, using two chairs, climbed up the balcony railings before slipping and falling.

Firefighters who first arrived at the scene had to go door to door to check where the victim came from.

Mat said he only realised what had happened when they knocked on the door at his apartment.

"I didn't believe, I thought he was hiding and I checked the whole house before I looked down from the balcony and saw him." he said.

There were heart-wrenching scenes at the hospital mortuary when the family came to identify the body.

Mohd Aqil's body will be taken to their hometown, Tanjung Malim, for burial.
