KUALA KUBU BARU: A trailer driver was charged Thursday at a magistrate's court here with causing the death of six family members in a horrific accident along the North-South Expressway.

Muhammad Syahrul Nizam Anuar was accused of speeding at KM403.2 on the north-bound lane of the NSE at 7.46am on April 2.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The 27-year-old faces imprisonment of between two and 10 years, and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000 upon conviction.

The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The driver of the trailer, which was laden with earth, is believed to have been unable to control his vehicle, which skidded and crashed into the victims' MPV.

The six were from three generations of a family – Wai Loon, 46, his wife Wong Check Lee, 53, and their sons Jie Yang, 19, and Jie Hong, 13, together with Wai Loon's father Leong Choy, 76, and brother Wai Keat, 35.
