Two charged with intent to commit terror

KUALA LUMPUR: A technician and an Indonesian man were charged in the Sessions Court here with three counts of attempting to go to Syria with intent to commit terrorism and possessing a video on Islamic State (IS).

Technician Mohamad Awang, 41, was charged with trying to go to Syria with intent to commit the act in front of Crystal Crown Hotel, Jalan Jambu Mawar, off Jalan Kepong Utama here at noon on Feb 21.

Mohamad was charged under Section 130JA of the Penal Code with travelling to or from Malaysia for the commission of terrorist acts in a foreign country.

Anwar, 28, a farmer in Indonesia, is accused of attempting to go to Syria for the same purpose at the same time and place. He was also charged under Section 130JA.

Anwar also faced another charge of possessing a video relating to IS in his handphone and was indicted under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code for providing, displaying or selling items associated with the terrorist group.

No plea was recorded and no bail was offered. Judge Zaman Mohd Noor fixed April 28 for mention.
