Suspect in cheating case caught by public and tied to tree

PETALING JAYA: A Chinese national allegedly involved in a fraud case was captured by the public and tied to a tree at a morning market in Puchong.

According to Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Megat Mohamad Aminuddin Megat Alias, policemen on patrol rushed to a morning market at Jalan Wawasan 2 after getting word of a “citizen’s arrest” there on Saturday.

The 56-year-old woman was tied to a tree with raffia string, according to pictures that surfaced on social media.

ACP Megat said police learned she was allegedly caught cheating in August last year at the same market.

The 58-year old victim from the earlier case spotted the suspect, leading to the public seizing her and tying her up.

“In August last year, the victim was approached by a woman, who claimed she needed help with her sick child and asked to be taken to a nearby location.

“Along the way, another suspect showed up and asked to be brought to the same location.

“Once there, they were met by a third suspect. All three asked the victim to remove her jewellery and put them into a bag. All three suspects disappeared soon after,” ACP Megat said.

The victim claimed to be ‘under a spell’ during the incident and her losses were estimated at about RM10,000.

ACP Megat said the cheating case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

The suspect, who has been remanded, had no previous criminal record, he added.
