Jais: Jamal tarnished image of Islamic institutions

PETALING JAYA: Controversial Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos has tarnished the image of Islamic institutions by misusing hearses and coffins for his protest against alleged corruption, says Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) director Datuk Haris Kasim.

He said Jamal’s act had tarnished the sanctity of the institution of mosques.

In a statement, Haris said that religious officials were manipulated by irresponsible people to allow hearses to be used in the demonstration held outside the Selangor state secretariat building on Tuesday.

After the incident, he said Jais was informed that several individuals claiming to be from a coalition of state NGOs had earlier told mosque officials that they wanted to rent hearses for the purpose of, among others, photography sessions, anti-gambling campaigns, exhibitions and so on.

However, the hearses ended up being used in Jamal’s demonstration.

“Jais regrets the action of irresponsible people who exploited mosque facilities for the demonstration.

“They have tarnished the sanctity of the mosques,” he said.

Haris advised mosque officials to be more careful in the future and check the validity of any programme that involved mosques before allowing their facilities to be leased or used.
