New CCID deputy chief aims to boost investigations

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) deputy director Comm Datuk A. Thaiveegan (pic) is all set to use his knowledge in investigations to improve the department’s capabi­lity.

With over 35 years experience, Comm Thaiveegan recently took over the position and will oversee all investigations.

“My goal would be to enhance our investigation into cases.

“I want to educate, enlighten and empower our investigation officers so that they will work to the best of their abilities,” Comm Thaiveegan told The Star in an interview.

He said the CCID dealt with white collar crime cases that range from thousands to millions of ringgit in losses.

“We must make sure that our personnel perform and carry themselves well,” he said.

Comm Thaiveegan said he would work to ensure a seamless relationship between his officers and the deputy public prosecutors’ office.

“Our job is to put criminals behind bars and we must work together to ensure that justice is served.

“We must also investigate any case that is brought before us. I do not want to hear investigators telling me that there is no case. How will we know that there is no case if investigations are not carried out?” he asked.

Comm Thaiveegan gave an assu­rance to the public that all cases would be treated with utmost importance.

It was previously reported that 1,106 African scam cases involving RM44.98mil were reported between February and July.

Federal CCID director Comm Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani had said between 2014 and 2015, such scams increased by 47.9% to 1,521 cases compared with 1,028 cases previously.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed recently re­­veal­ed that 14,627 online scam cases were reported in 2015 with economic losses totalling RM1.09bil.

Comm Thaiveegan said the depart­­ment would also be looking at engaging community policing and youth policing methods to raise awareness about the many types of fraud and breach of trust cases.

“We believe it is important to educate our young ones about these crimes from an early age so that they may be able to detect such deceptions and be less likely to fall prey to these scams,” he said.
