Malaysian injured in scaffolding collapse

A 24-YEAR-OLD Malaysian visiting Taiwan was seriously injured when she was hit by scaffolding that toppled from a 24-storey hotel as Typhoon Megi swept through the region, Nanyang Siang Pau reported.

According to the local Apple Daily, Lee Jia Ying, who was on holiday, was in a car with her Taiwanese friend driving past Le Meri­dien Taichung when the incident happened on Tuesday.

Both were rushed to hospital and Lee, who works in Singapore, remained unconscious after major operations.

A netizen, in a posting on Facebook, hit out at the authority of SJK(C) Sungai Chua in Kajang, Selangor, over the incident.

The school authority and its parent-teacher association, however, refuted the claim.

Headmistress Yang Xiu Zhi said the school did not ignore the pupil’s needs and had agreed to allow the parents to drive their car into the school compound to pick up their son.

Yang said the parents were stopped from driving into the school on Aug 15 by the school’s board of directors chairman, who was unaware of the boy’s condition.

When contacted, the mother said the headmistress and teachers cared about her son.

The headmistress, she added, had apologised to her for not knowing earlier that the child was sick.
