KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 368 summonses to drivers of commercial and public transport vehicles who drove on the wrong side of the road.

JPJ director-general Datuk Nadzri Siron said Ops Laju, which started on Aug 4, was carried out at major highways from 7am till midnight.

Most of the offenders gave excuses that they were overtaking other vehicles or had to get to their destination as soon as possible, he said.

Speaking to reporters after giving away Jalur Gemilang flags at the Jalan Duta toll plaza here to mark National Day, he said that out of the 368 summonses, 166 summonses were issued to commercial vehicles carrying more than 5,000kg.

Another 161 summonses involved public transport vehicles such as buses.

The rest of the summonses were issued to commercial vehicles that were carrying less than 5,000kg, he added.

Nadzri said that JPJ enforcement division’s methods included patrolling the highways on marked and unmarked vehicles, as well as using enforcement personnel disguised as bus passengers.

Of late, he said that there were also those who would “challenge” JPJ personnel who were merely carrying out their duties to act against commercial vehicles that were overloaded.

“Some of these culprits slashed tyres of enforcement vehicles,” he said.

He said JPJ was working closely with the police as well as the Land Public Transport Commission on this.
