Selena Gomez’s concert goes on smoothly

SHAH ALAM: American pop star Selena Gomez’s concert went on without a hitch at Stadium Melawati here last night.

About 4,000 fans showed up for the 70-minute concert, which is her second stop in the Asian-leg of the Revival world tour, as part of an effort to promote her latest album of the same name.

The 24-year-old singer entertained her fans, nicknamed Selenators, with hits from her newest release such as Good For You, Hands To Myself and Same Old Love as well as old favourites Who Says and Love You Like A Love Song.

Gomez, who was performing in Malaysia for the first time, was clad in an all-black ensemble comprising a long-sleeved top and long, flowy pants when she took the stage at 9.15pm. She later slipped into a silver sequinned dress.

Last week, PAS Youth dakwah committee chairman Hafez Sabri called for the concert to be cancelled as Gomez’s sexy appearance would tarnish the sanctity of the month of Syawal.

A strong police presence was seen around the venue.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Darul Islah Malaysia president Ustaz Masridzi Sat voiced his disapproval of the concert in a statement outside the stadium grounds.

“Why don’t we invite entertainers such as those from Asean countries like Brunei and Indonesia who are well-mannered? Why do we always look to those from the West, those who are not well-mannered and lacked morals?” he asked.

A group later gathered outside the stadium and prayed.

Gomez first shot to fame as the lead actress of Disney Channel’s Wizards Of Waverly Place in 2007 before starting her own band, Selena Gomez And The Scene, the following year.

She started her career as a solo artiste in 2013.

Gomez was also under the spotlight for her high-profile on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber which began in 2011.

She even accompanied Bieber to Malaysia when he performed at MTV World Stage in 2012. She is currently the most followed person on Instagram with 91.3 million followers.
