Motorcyclist survives after being flung off Penang Bridge in accident

BUTTERWORTH: A motorcyclist survived after he was flung off the Penang Bridge and landed in the sea, following a hit-and-run with a lorry near the midspan of the bridge.

Mohd Ashraff Mohd Fauzi, 28, from Taman Bayan, Kulim, Kedah, was travelling from the mainland at about 9am when his motorcycle was hit from behind, causing him to be thrown off the bridge.

State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Mohd Azman Hussin said Mohd Ashraff was rescued by fishermen who were near the area where he fell.

“The victim was sent to the marine police base in Batu Uban and given medical aid by the Perai Fire and Rescue Department’s Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit.

"He was then sent to the Penang Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Azman said the lorry was nowhere to be found when the department’s personnel arrived at the scene at 9.22am.
