KUALA LUMPUR: City police have beefed up their presence at places of interest and entertainment outlets here.
City police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said the move followed the terrorist attack in downtown Jakarta that left seven people dead, including the five attackers.
“We are not leaving anything to chance,” he told The Star yesterday.
“We have deployed enough personnel, including from the City police headquarters, to be on patrol.
“Our K-9 unit has been directed to conduct patrols at entertainment outlets and shopping malls in Bukit Bintang and the surrounding area.”
Comm Tajuddin said plainclothes policemen were also directed to be vigilant and to be out and about on patrols.
“He said the tourist police unit would also be on duty at places of interest to keep a watchful eye on everyone.
“Besides this, I have also directed our police patrols to monitor and conduct more frequent patrols at the various embassies in the city,” he said.
Meanwhile in Johor, police have increased their presence at several checkpoints within the state.
State police chief Comm Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the country’s national security alert was at the highest level, as announced by the Inspector-General of Police.
“I have ordered all district police chiefs to increase security at public places – at shopping malls and entertainment centres – located throughout the state.
“This also includes all entry and exit points into Johor such as the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex, Stulang Laut Jetty, Second Link crossing in Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah, Pasir Gudang Jetty, Kukup Laut Jetty and Senai International Airport,” he said in a statement.
