Five workers hurt as fire razes three vessels


SANDAKAN: Five workers were injured in a fire that razed three wooden vessels off Batu Sapi, near here, yesterday.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Operations chief Haikal Jammy Ngali said the victims, all men, were sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for treatment.

Three workers suffered burns. The victims have yet to be identified.

Seventeen firemen rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 3.01pm.

Haikal said the fire destroyed three wooden vessels including one laden with 500 barrels of petrol.

“Initially, the fire involved a boat near the jetty but the owner released it to about 200 metres into the sea,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile in Kota Kinabalu, fire destroyed two houses and six vehicles in Jalan Kurol Melangi, Kampung Likas at 3.40pm.

Kota Kinabalu City Police chief ACP M.Chandra said the two houses destroyed were made of wood and concrete.

No casualties were reported and the losses were under investigation.

Sabah Fire and Rescue public relations officer Mohd Affandi K.Ramin said three fire engines rushed to the scene when informed of the fire at 3.41pm. Twenty-two firemen brought the fire under control at 4.05pm.— Bernama
