Limited edition Lego sets sold out in 30 minutes

GEORGE TOWN: Lego enthusiasts in Penang wiped out the limited edition Shell Tanker Lego units at most of the Shell petrol stations here within half an hour of them opening.

A check by The Star at three Shell stations yesterday confirmed this.

Burma Road station attendant Mohammad Fadzli Mahrim, 26, said people had already formed a long queue at least an hour before the station opened at 6.30am.

“And it was all sold out within half an hour,” he said at the station yesterday.

IT engineer and Lego enthusiast Lee Teik Hsien, 37, said he arrived at the Sunshine Square Shell station at 5.15am and there were already 17 people ahead of him.

“The station opened at 6am and I managed to get two units,” he said.

Lee needed one each for his sons Kai Zher, seven, and Kai Yi, five.

Since only one Shell Tanker Lego set could be bought with a single receipt, Lee kept the receipts for two recent fuel purchases from the same station.

“Our entire family are Lego lovers. We have 30 Lego sets – big and small,” he said.

Scenes of the mad rush for the collectibles were posted on Facebook and in just a few hours, about 800 people had shared the photos.

The limited edition Shell Tanker Lego units were available at all Shell petrol stations nationwide for RM9.90 with every RM40 worth of Shell V-Power or Shell V-Power Racing fuel, Shell Helix HX7 4L or Hx5 4L purchased.

It was free with every Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology 4L.

The last time Penang witnessed a similar occurrence was when McDonald’s sold miniatures of characters from the movie Despicable Me 2 with their Happy Meals in July 2013.
