New MB finds something special in the number 14

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu’s newly installed Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman finds it hard to ignore the number 14.

“I am the 14th MB of the state and it is the year 2014. It also dawned on me that I will head the state Barisan Nasional into the 14th general election. There has to be some special meaning behind the number 14,” he said during an informal dinner with the Terengganu Journalists Club (Kawat) here.

Ahmad Razif, 49, who was sworn-in as Terengganu Mentri Besar on May 12, said one of his main missions was to strengthen the state Barisan and Umno before the next general election.

“There is a lot of work to be done and we must get down to it immediately.

“The aim is to retain the seats that we currently have and to regain the seats that we lost,” added the Seberang Takir assemblyman.

Ahmad Razif inherited a fragile state government from his predecessor Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, with only 17 seats out of the 32 in the state assembly with PAS holding 14 and PKR one.

The flimsy majority was put to the test last week when Ahmad Said and two other assemblymen quit Umno to become independent representatives.

The Barisan Nasional became a minority government in the state for about 36 hours until the trio retracted their resignations and returned to the party’s fold.

“I’m glad that everything has been settled and the political situation is back to normal. Now it’s time to get back to work, which is solving the peoples’ problems,” he said.
