IGP: New laws and improved evidence collection will curb crime

BESUT: Police will ensure that the new special preventive laws similar to the Emergency Ordinance will get hardened criminals off the streets via many methods including thorough evidence collection. 

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police force is committed to collect sufficient evidence to ensure air tight cases under the new law.

"We are also aware of fears the new law will involve abuse. However,  we have already proposed various safeguards to prevent any abuse of power," he told a press conferense after attending a briefing on the preparation for the Kuala Besut by-election here.

Khalid was commenting on  critism that the police would slack on evidence collection despite having the new law.

He explained that police personnel would also be getting sufficient training to improve their evidence collection method. 

"My men will work harder as we believe this new law will enable the police to take action on hardened criminals and kingpins. 

"This new law will be beneficial for the people as it will reduce street crimes," he said.

He added that the new law would prioritised the safety and security of the people even more so compared to the criminals.

"The rights of the innocent people will be our main concern. 

"We are confident serious crimes will be reduced significantly when the new law is introduced," he said.
