Want free books? Of course you do. BookFest@Malaysia 2014, which opens Saturday July 26 at the KL Convention Centre – in addition to selling thousands of books at low, low prices and huge discounts – is now adding on the chance for you to win lots of books through its Popular Quiz Show. The 9th edition of BookFest has over RM5,000 worth of book prizes and RM1,800 worth of vouchers for the show.
The quiz happens every day throughout the nine-day event, from 8PM-8:45PM at KLCC Hall Five. This year's twist to the competition is the "jackpot question": If no one gets the answer, the prize snowballs into the next day. And yes, all the book titles are different at every quiz.
You want in? Then look out for the entry coupon in Star2 page 15 of The Star tomorrow July 26. Star2 will print one coupon a day until the event ends on August 3 Sunday. Clip out the coupons; one coupon allows one person to participate in one session according to the date on the coupon.
BookFest organisers Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd introduced the quiz at the 2011 BookFest to practically give books away for free to encourage reading. Getting Malaysians to read has been the guiding principle behind the festival, as well as that of the Popular-The Star Readers’ Choice Awards with its “read, vote, win” component.
This year’s awards will be announced at the BookFest on Aug 2, and the reader whose votes match the final ranking the closest will win a RM100 book hamper, a voucher worth RM50 from Popular, and a one-year membership to the bookshop.
Several of the nominated authors will make appearances over the course of the festival, along with other bestselling writers. The theme for the opening day is “Kids rock!”, so children will get to meet True Singapore Ghost Stories author Russell Lee, who will be reading his books and signing autographs at Hall Five from 2PM-2:45PM.
Look out for Inspector Singh Investigates writer Shamini Flint; the author of the hit series will be talking about the books she wrote before the redoubtable crime-solver was created. Flint, a Singapore Arts Council’s featured author, will also share from her latest children's book, Diary Of A Soccer Star, in Hall Five tomorrow from 11AM-11:45am.
On Sunday July 27, it’s all about “Money sense” for the adults, with experts such as Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Jew and Conrad Alvin Lim making appearances. Check the BookFest website for complete details of author appearances and all events throughout the nine-day festival.
