SC promotes financial literacy for World Investor Week

KUALA LUMPUR: Securities Commission Malaysia is taking to Facebook and video to raise awareness on financial planning and how to avoid illegal financial schemes.

In support of World Investor Week from Oct 2 to 8, 2017,  the SC hosted a Facebook live chat on Thursday, which featured a panel discussion in financial planning.

Themed “FinPlan4U - A Step Towards Financial Health And Wellness”, the live chat session featured experts from the SC, Financial Planning Association Malaysia (FPAM) as well as an award-winning financial planner on the benefits of engaging a financial planner.

The SC is also screening an anti-scam awarenss video called "T.I.P.U Video" at selected TGV cinemas nationwide from now until Oct 11, 2017. According to the SC, it "serves as a public service message to highlight the modus operandi of scammers and advise the public on where to seek assistance when they are in doubt".

The initiative is timely as Bank Negara deputy governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour had pointed out on Tuesday that Malaysians are prone to financial fraud with a total loss of RM379mil from 2015 up to the first quarter of 2017 owing to these scams.

To further promote financial literacy and education, the SC will organise its annual flagship event, InvestSmart Fest 2017, themed "Invest For Your Future", at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Oct 13 to 15, 2017.

The event will gather capital market institutions, associations, industry players and relevant agencies under one roof in order to raise awareness on investment opportunities available in the Malaysian capital market.

The public can register for a free initial assessment by a licensed financial planner during ISF 2017 by emailing their name, IC number and contact details to investsmart@seccom.com.my.
