Jealous housewife fined RM15,000 over maid's assault

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian part time maid suffered a week of assault by a housewife who thought she had an affair with her husband two years ago.

Marifa Tima's ordeal started after R. Yarputnedave, 43, became suspicious of her husband's marital affairs.

On July 10, Yarputnedave and three others drove to Kamunting in Perak and broke into Marifa's home, kicked her in the stomach and dragged her into a car.

During the drive to Kuala Lumpur, Yarputnedave cut Marifa's hair with a pair of scissors.

On reaching Kepong, Marifa was locked in an apartment where she was further assulted with belts and electric cables.

Marifa said she begged on hands and knees for her attackers to stop but they continued to assault her with her hands and legs tied with wires.

It was not until July 16 when police, acting on a tip-off, raided the apartment. They arrested student M. Pusparani, 27, and security guards R. Kanagarajah, 35 and R. Jeevanathan, 29. Yarputnedave was detained later.

At the Sessions Court Thursday, all four pleaded quilty to an amended charge of unlawfully detaining Marifa and intentionally causing harm with "potentially fatal" weapons including wire cables, wooden stick, helmets and scissors.

The offences took place in an apartment on Jalan 2/36, Bukit Sri Bintang, Kepong.

Sessions judge Zulqarnain Hassan fined Pusparani, Kanagarajah, and Yarputnedave RM15,000 each for the charges.

Jeevanathan was jailed for two years from the date of arrest but is considered to have served the full term as he had been in remand the last 22 months.

Deputy public prosecutor Tan Sew Ping submitted a Victim Impact Statement made by Marifa, saying that the experience had severely traumatised and injured her.

Representatives from the Indonesian Embassy confirmed that she would be sent back to Indonesia and was now under the care of the embassy.
