RCI report: Time to review suspicious ICs, says Yong Teck Lee

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian identity cards and MyKads that were suspiciously issued to foreigners through syndicates should be immediately reviewed, said Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

He said the ICs and MyKads issued illegally based on false information should be made void under the law.

"The government should immediately weed out the documents that have been issued illegally," he said when commenting on the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Immigrants in Sabah report which was released on Wednesday.

Yong, a former chief minister of Sabah, said the report indicated that many had used false documents to obtain "citizenship" through syndicates and senior officers of the National Registration Department.

He said issuing Sabah ICs was the only viable solution to the issue of dubious citizenship documents as there was little confidence placed on the federal authorities to resolve the illegal immigrant and documents issue.

He said SAPP had submitted a mechanism on Sabah ICs to the RCI at the request chairman Tan Sri Steve Shim.

"Sabah use to issue identity cards since 1963 until the 1980s and since we are capable of doing it, why can’t we set up our own IC department," he said, adding that the party was willing to work with the government to set up administrative mechanism for Sabah IC Department.
