IPOH: The Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 163 summonses to motorists on the first day of its crackdown on vehicles with fancy number plates, running strobe lights and unapproved high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps.
Its enforcement chief Mohd Ariff Abdul Rahman said the operation was conducted in major towns such as in Ipoh, Gerik, Tapah, Kuala Kangsar and Teluk Intan on Saturday.
He said 21 summonses were issued to motorists who breached the rules on number plates.
Other summonses were for installation of strobe lights, unapproved HID headlamps and expired road tax, insurance and driving licences, he said, adding that the operation started in the morning and continued until midnight.
Mohd Ariff said 808 vehicles were inspected.
He said that besides summonses, 91 notices were issued to motorists.
“We also gave warnings and educated motorists on heavily tinted vehicle windshields and windows,’’ he said, adding that enforcement would be carried out on heavily tinted vehicles from May 1 next year.
“We are giving them (the vehicle owners) enough time to replace the tints,” he said.
Mohd Ariff said the summonses issued to motorists on fancy number plates were higher because the operation could be carried out from day to night.
He said for strobe lights and unapproved HID headlamps, they could only catch the culprits when it was dark.
After months of warnings, the department started its nationwide crackdown against motorists flouting the rules and specifications from Nov 1.
