PETALING JAYA: The remand period of six Customs officers has been extended for another week.
The six suspects were among 12 Customs officers, aged between 35 and 58, who were arrested on Sept 3 for alleged corruption, involving hundreds of millions of ringgit worth of contraband items.
A state director was among those arrested during the raids, which were conducted simultaneously in Klang, Dengkil and Cheras.
In a statement Wednesday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said that an officer was released on today without conditions.
The remand period for four officers will end Thursday while another officer will be remanded for another six days to facilitate investigations on the smuggling of items with unpaid Customs duties.
The statement also said that another officer was detained at the MACC office in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
He will be remanded for a week.
The suspects arrived at the Magistrate’s Court here at 10.25am Wednesday.
Magistrate Mohd Nazri Omran issued the remand order to enable the police to further investigate the case under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering Act and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2010.
MACC was represented by deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais while the officers were represented by a team of lawyers led by Gerard Lazarus.
