Nicol awarded Spirit of Squash award

Nicol David celebrates after progressing to the semi-finals of the World Series Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Nicol David did not leave the World Series Finals empty-handed.

The Malaysian won the women’s Spirit of Squash award at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) awards ceremony in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on Sunday. The 32-year-old, who reached the semi-finals of the World Series Finals, was picked by her fellow players as the Tour’s best in sportsmanship and fair play both on and off court throughout the season.

Egyptian Raneem El Welily finished as runner-up.

Egypt emerged as the biggest winners, winning nine out of the 10 awards.

The men’s Player of the Year was won by world No. 1 Mohamed El Shorbagy with compatriot Omar Mosaad as runner-up.

Nour El Sherbini, the world and British Open champion, was the winner of the women’s Player of the Year award. Britain’s Laura Massaro, the winner of the World Series Finals on Saturday, finished second.

The 20-year-old Nour also won the Fans’ Player of the season, ahead of compatriot Nouran Gohar. - Bernama
