A bittersweet day for lifter Mohd Taufiq

KANGAR: It was a day of mixed emotions for Pahang weightlifter Mohd Taufiq Idham Razali in the Perlis Sukma.

Taufiq, who turned 16 last month, was disappointed to finish fourth with a poor lift of 88kg in the snatch event in the men’s below 52kg category at the Kem Bina Negara in Kuala Perlis on Tuesday.

But an hour later, the Form Four student of SM Rompin, showed nerves of steel to win the gold medal in the clean and jerk event with a personal best of 111kg.

Penang’s Mohd Harith Luftie Adnan bagged the silver with a lift of 110kg while the bronze went to Perlis’ Mohd Aizat Ahmad Nazim, who lifted 107kg.

Taufiq was upset with himself for missing out on a medal in the snatch event. His 88kg lift was 5kg less than his personal best.

“I came to Sukma with the mission of winning two golds but I will return with just one. I could not lift well in the snatch event because the platform was slippery. It took me some time to get used to it.

“But I was glad that I improved on my personal best and won the gold in the clean and jerk,” said Taufiq, who wants to follow in the footsteps of former national weightlifter Amirol Hamizan, who won three gold medals in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

“Amirol is my idol ... he has been my inspiration,” said Taufiq.

It was double joy for Pahang as they also won the men’s snatch event.

Mohd Shahrizal Abdul Razak, who failed to clear the first two lifts of 89kg and 90kg, cleared 90kg on the third lift in the snatch event.

He and Kedah’s Mohd Anas Malik Mokhtar both lifted the same weight of 90kg but Shahrizal was awarded the gold because of his lighter body weight (51.61kg compared to Anas’ 51.63kg).
