10-man Selangor thrash Terengganu to remain top

PETALING JAYA: Ten-man Selangor came alive in the second half to thrash Terengganu 4-1 and stay atop of the Super League.

At the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu last night, Selangor broke the deadlock through Brazilian Paulo Rangel in the 46th minute. Abdul Hadi Yahya (49th), S. Veenod (83rd) and S. Kunalan (92nd) contributed the other goals. Terengganu replied through Moustapha Dabo in the 53rd minute.

After scoring the opening goal, Rangel was sent off after elbowing a Terengganu player in an off-the-ball incident. He reacted angrily and refused to leave the field. Fortunately, his team-mates finally managed to cajole him to go to the dressing room.

Despite being a man down, the Red Giants were still too strong for the Turtles. The Klang Valley side doubled their lead when Abdul Hadi blasted in a spot-kick following a foul on Andik Vermansyah by Terengganu defender Ahmad Azlan Zainal.

Senegalese Dabo gave Terengganu a glimmer of hope by scoring from a goalmouth melee in the 53rd minute. But Selangor put the game out of Terengganu’s reach with two late goals by Veenod and Kunalan.

The Red Giants remain top of the 12-team league with 37 points after 18 matches while Terengganu are third on 31 points.

At the Larkin Stadium, second-placed Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) kept the heat on Selangor with a comfortable 3-0 win over Sime Darby.

Veteran striker Mohd Amri Yahya opened scoring for the homesters in the 45th minute. Argentinian striker Jorge Diaz added the other goals in the 52nd and 81st minutes.

JDT now have 35 points to trail Selangor by two points with four more matches remaining in the league.
