Terengganu eyeing glory days in Sukma

KANGAR: Terengganu are looking at re-establishing their superiority in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) football competition when they start their Group B campaign against Kedah at the UiTM Stadium on Monday.

Terengganu won the football gold medal three times in a row – 2006, 2008 and 2010 – before their reign was ended by the Federal Territories in the quarter-finals of the Pahang Sukma in 2012.

Terengganu coach Mohd Azhari Salim, however, is aware that it won’t be an easy task as his side have only trained together for less than a fortnight.

“Our players are from the Terengganu and T-Team President’s Cup teams ... we didn’t have time to prepare the squad due to several reasons,” said Azhari.

“The players from the Terengganu and T-Team President’s Cup teams have been playing with their senior sides in the Super League. T-Team are still in the running in the President’s Cup, having qualified for the quarter-finals.

“All this left us with just 10 days to prepare for Sukma and I had to squeeze in two training sessions per day. But the players responded well to the hectic training schedule and I think we have a good chance in the competition.”

Terengganu will definitely be fresher against Kedah, who lost their opening match to Perak 2-1 on Saturday.
