THE phrase “the law is an ass” was popularised by Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist through the remarks of one of the characters, Mr Bumble: “If the law supposes that, the law is a ass – a idiot.”
The dictionary gives several meanings for the word “ass”. In Mr Bumble’s case, it is used to refer to “a pompous fool”.
