Plausible reason for Perlis move

MINISTER in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is reported to have said that the Federal Government’s move to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act is “timely and must be seen as a positive step” (The Star, Dec 10).

Section 88A of the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill 2016 tabled in Parliament for first reading last month is said to provide expressly that should one parent convert to Islam, the common religion of the parents before the conversion shall remain as the religion of their minor children and that a minor child cannot be converted to Islam without the approval of both parents.
