Maximum fine of RM10,000 for crashing into nasi kandar shop

GEORGE TOWN: A 26-year-old scrap metal trader was fined RM10,000 by a magistrate’s court here for reckless driving.

M. Kesava Rajah was found guilty of crashing his MPV into a nasi kandar restaurant in Chulia Street Ghaut at 11.16pm on June 6.

He was charged under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 and jail of not more than a year.

Kesava, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence.

Prosecuting officer ASP Ahmad Padzli Ali urged the court to mete out an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson to others.

He said the punishment would be a reminder to motorists to drive more carefully and respect other road users.

It was reported that the MPV crashed as the driver tried to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road.

It knocked into a motorcycle before ploughing into the restaurant. No one was injured.

Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid ordered Kesava to pay the fine in default of six months jail. He paid the fine.
